By all means, call the show out on its problems - every show has them. To love a show is to realise it has its faults, but to still enjoy it, regardless. But these new gen fans are far, FAR too critical of Friends, and come across as though they don’t enjoy the show, which is just sad. And like this says, they are ruining the fandom with their constant negativity and hate. This fandom was much more enjoyable, even just a few years ago, before the over analysing and Tumblr Ross Geller hate gate started. Suddenly, you’re made to feel like you’re a terrible person, sexist, anti-feminist, etc, if you like Ross Geller. Or if you love the end of the show when Rachel got off that damn plane and chose Ross over Paris. Like, that was one of the most iconic moments of the show - that people still quote today - that’s now being shat upon.

I have said this before, but I’m glad I grew up with the show and was part of the fandom for all those years, when this negativity didn’t surround it. I feel bad for new gen fans who don’t over analyse or hate on it/the characters, because I feel like they are missing out on what was once one of the best TV show fandoms I’ve ever been a part of.

I wanted Friends to be on Netflix for so long. I was so excited when it was announced that it was finally happening. Now I feel like it’s the worst thing to ever happen to this show.

Friends is my most favorite show of all time. I’ve loved it so dearly for so long. It means so much to me. I loved the Friends fandom here on tumblr. I thought it was so great that so many of us still love the show so much even after all these years that we still want to talk about it and share gifs of it. Despite the show predating social media, it has a thriving fandom on it. That’s really special. And it was nice that we didn’t have to deal with the stress and drama over reacting to episodes and wondering what’s going to happen next because it’s not an ongoing show. The Friends fandom was more like a celebration of the show. I really never saw negativity in it. Sure, people have their different opinions, but the bottom line was always that we love Friends. There weren’t fights or insults.

But now…

No, the show is not perfect. Yes, there are some “problematic” moments. But remember that you are looking at a show that began over 20 years ago and ended over 10 years ago through your 2015 lenses. That is a LONG time. And things have changed a LOT since then. Friends is a product of its time. That does not make it bad or no longer worth watching. There are many older things (much older than Friends) with many more and much worse problematic issues. That doesn’t mean people can’t still watch and enjoy them. You just have to accept that it was a different time. (And be glad that things are changing!) If it still bothers you too much to be able to enjoy it, then don’t watch it. It’s that simple.

If you’re going to be critical of the show, be fair. You wanna call out Ross for some of the things he did or said? Okay, but what about the rest of the group? Why are they apparently exempt? Ross has flaws, yes, no one is going to deny that. But they all do. None of these characters are perfect. They feel like very real people, which is why they have resonated with so many people and continue to do so all these years later.

And if you’re gonna get all SJW about it, at least get it right. Rachel giving up a dream job halfway around the world in order to be with the love of her life and father of her child is NOT anti-feminist. In fact, it is anti-feminist to say so. Ross did not force her to stay. It was HER choice to get off that plane. Because she loved him. There is NOTHING wrong with her decision to choose love and family over a job. It is offensive to say otherwise.

But if you still can’t get on board with the show, fine. You don’t have to like it. But do NOT come into this fandom and attempt to poison our views of the show and these characters. You are not going to change our opinion. We are not blind to the issues just because we choose not to focus on them and continue to love the show and characters regardless. So many of us have grown up with this show and these characters. They are our family. You are not going to take them away from us.
